The Baofeng UV-5R

The Baofeng UV-5R is a high quality, two-way radio capable of operating on two difference bands of the radio frequency spectrum. The UV-5R has gained popularity due to its price as well as ease of use and reliability. The word “Baofeng” closely translates to“Storm Wind” from the Chinese language. An appropriate name, considering the Baofeng UV-5R has taken the market by storm due to its unbelievably low price and is well known as a great starter radio for amateurs looking to enter the field.

By definition, the Baofeng UV-5R is a two-way radio which allows the propagation of invisible electromagnetic radiation signals through free space. The total frequency range of this portion of the electromagnetic spectrum is approximatelyfrom 3 kHz to 300 GHz, which the Baofeng UV-5R utilizes. These waves are called radio waves, and they travel through space by means of oscillating electric and magnetic fields that pass through the air and vacuum of space.

Information, such as the sound transmitted to and from the Baofeng UV-5R,  travels through the radio wave by changing (also known as modulating) some property of the radiated waves, such as their amplitude, frequency, phase, or pulse width. When radio waves from the Baofeng UV-5R strike an electrical conductor like the antenna, the oscillating fields induce an alternating current. This alternating current in the antenna is used to convert the information in the way back to its original form.

The radio frequency spectrum that the Baofeng UV-5R uses is divided into small parts called bands. Each band is allocated a specific range of radio frequencies. This range of frequencies allocated to the different bands varies from place to place, which can be seen when using the Baofeng UV-5R in different locations or cities. When we say a device is dual band or tri band, it means the device is capable of operating on two or three different bands respectively.

The Baofeng UV-5R is a dual band handheld two-way radio, and is also known as a dual band transceiver. A transceiver is device that consists of both a transmitter and a receiver in the same housing. The Baofeng UV-5R is a dual band device, which means it is capable of operating on two different bands of the radio frequency spectrum.

One such band is the VHF band which stands for “Very High Frequency”. Technically, the VHF range of the radio frequency spectrum ranges from 30 MHz to 300 MHz. The Baofeng UV-5R is capable of operating on the VHF range from 136.000 MHz to 174.997 MHz without any issues. This range covers the complete 2-meter amateur radio band, which ranges from 144.000 MHz to 148.000 MHz in United States.

The other band is the UHF band which stands for “Ultra High Frequency”. Technically, the UHF range stretches from 300 MHz all the way up to 3GHz on the radio frequency spectrum. The Baofeng UV-5R is capable of operating on the UHF range from 400.000 MHz to 520.975 without any issues. This range covers the complete 70-centimeter amateur radio band, which ranges from 420.000 MHz to 450.000 MHz in the United States.
